Apple Just Handed Siri to Google. Half Your Customers Are About to Use a Real AI to Find a Contractor.

iOS 26.4 ships this spring with Gemini-powered Siri. iOS 27 lands this fall. The new Siri pulls local recommendations from Apple Maps, which pulls from Apple Business Connect. 86 percent of contractors have not claimed theirs.

AI Search Intelligence for the Trades

Apple just admitted out loud that Siri was broken and handed the keys to Google.

On January 12, 2026, Apple and Google confirmed a multi-year partnership to plug Gemini 3 into the heart of Siri. The first wave ships in iOS 26.4 this spring. The full rebuild lands in iOS 27 this fall. It is the biggest change to Siri since it launched in 2011.

If you run an HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or roofing shop, you need to care about this for one simple reason: roughly half the homeowners in your service area are walking around with an iPhone in their pocket. Starting in a few weeks, when they ask their phone for help, an actual AI is going to answer instead of the dumb voice assistant we have been ignoring for a decade.

What Just Changed

Old Siri did three things badly: timers, weather, and texting your spouse. Anything beyond that opened a Google search results page.

New Siri runs on Gemini for what Apple calls "world knowledge" queries. It synthesizes answers. It maintains conversation context. It uses your iPhone's camera and screen content. It takes action across apps. It is going to handle the question "my AC is making a clicking noise and not cooling — who do I call in Mauldin tonight?" and actually return a name, a phone number, and offer to dial it.

That question is worth $400 to $4,000 to the right HVAC shop, and Siri is about to start picking the winner.

Where Siri Pulls Its Local Recommendations From

This is the part most contractors have completely missed. Siri does not pull local business data from Google. It pulls from Apple Maps, which pulls from Apple Business Connect.

Apple Business Connect is Apple's free dashboard for verifying and managing your business listing on Apple Maps. It launched in 2023 and almost no one in the trades is using it. We just audited 50 contractor websites in our service area. Forty-three of them have an unclaimed or incomplete Apple Business Connect listing.

Translation: when half the iPhone homeowners in your market ask the new AI Siri "find me a plumber near me right now," your business is either not in the answer or is in the answer with a wrong phone number, missing services, and no photos. Your Google Business Profile is excellent. Your Apple presence is invisible.

Why This Matters More Than ChatGPT or Gemini Standalone

ChatGPT app is on roughly 700 million weekly active users. Gemini app is growing fast. But neither one has the friction-free distribution Apple has. Siri is on the iPhone home button. It activates from a press, a voice command, or a side button. It is the fastest path from "I have a problem" to "phone call placed" that exists.

And Apple just made it actually competent.

The contractors who own their Apple presence in the next 90 days own a discovery channel that is going to feed real, immediate, ready-to-buy emergency calls every single day. The ones who do not are giving that traffic to whoever did the work.

The Five-Step Apple Visibility Sprint

This is everything you need to do this month. None of it is hard. Most of it is free.

  • Claim your Apple Business Connect listing. Go to businessconnect.apple.com. Sign in with your Apple ID. Search your business. Verify ownership. Allow 1 to 7 days for the verification call or postcard.
  • Complete every field. Hours, phone, address, service area, every category that fits, website URL, and a clean business description with the services you actually want to be called for. Photos of trucks, crews, jobsites, and team. The same content that wins on Google wins here.
  • Add Showcases. These are Apple's version of Google Posts. Use them for current promotions, seasonal services, and emergency availability. Update them at least monthly.
  • Mark up your website with LocalBusiness schema. Service type, area served, hours, phone, price range, and emergency availability. Siri reads this when Gemini pulls a web answer.
  • Format your service pages for voice queries. "How much does it cost to replace a 3-ton AC unit in [your city]?" Direct question, direct answer in the first paragraph. Voice assistants pull featured snippet content, and conversational queries have very different intent than typed ones.

The Phone Call Layer

Here is what happens when the new Siri actually starts dialing your shop. The homeowner says "call them." Siri places the call. It might be 2 a.m. on a Sunday. If your phone rings to voicemail, you lost the homeowner Apple just gift-wrapped for you.

This is why every shop that takes mobile AI seriously is also deploying an AI phone agent. Trillet, Marlie.ai, Retell, Vapi, ServiceTitan Voice — pick one. The combination of "Siri sends the call" plus "AI agent answers the call" is the new lead funnel for residential trades, and shops that build both layers are going to leave shops that built neither in the dust.

The Quiet Math

Roughly 55 percent of U.S. smartphones are iPhones. Apple has 1.4 billion active iPhone users globally and over 200 million in the U.S. alone. Voice assistant usage is climbing every year because the assistants are finally good enough to use. The new Siri is going to push that adoption curve hard.

The local trade businesses that show up on Apple's surface in the next 12 months will own decade-long advantages in their market. The ones that ignore it will keep being shocked that their phone is quieter while their competitor's phone is louder.

Apple Business Connect takes 30 minutes to claim and 2 hours to fill out properly. Schema markup takes a developer half a day. An AI phone agent takes a week to deploy.

That is the whole project. Do it before iOS 26.4 ships.
