Joy Hawkins Just Measured The New AI Local Pack: It Cuts Two Out Of Three Businesses From The Old 3-Pack. The Call Button Is Gone. If Your Booking Software Cannot Return A Slot In Under One Second, You Lose The Lead.

Joy Hawkins published the new AI local pack measurements May 28 — Google's AI-powered local results surface only 32 percent of the businesses that the legacy 3-pack did. Two out of three shops in your metro just got cut. The call button is gone. AI Mode hit 1B MAUs with queries 3x the length of standard searches. AI Overviews appear on roughly half of all queries. Agentic booking rolls to all US users this summer with a one-second SLA on real-time slot return. The shops who survive the cut wire the booking endpoint before July.

AI Search Intelligence for the Trades

Joy Hawkins ran the math on the new AI local pack and the answer is uncomfortable.

Hawkins — the local SEO researcher whose data has set the standard for ten years — tracked which businesses Google's new AI-powered local results surface versus the legacy 3-pack. The new AI local pack surfaces only 32 percent of the businesses the old 3-pack used to. Two out of three businesses you used to see when a homeowner searched for an HVAC company in your city are now invisible inside the AI answer. The call button is gone. That part she also confirmed. And the booking flow that Google announced at I/O 2026 is now rolling to all US users this summer for home repair, beauty, pet care, and other local services.

Read that paragraph twice. Then keep reading. Because the most important sentence in the agentic-booking rollout is buried in the Joy Hawkins commentary on the FOMO.ai analysis: "If your scheduling software cannot return a real-time slot in under one second, the booking goes to a competitor."

The One-Second SLA Is The Whole Game

Forget the marketing layer for a second. The structural shift is this. When Google AI Mode answers a homeowner's "HVAC repair near me" query, the AI now wants to complete the booking inside the answer. Not send the homeowner to your website. Not even surface your phone number. The agent calls your scheduling endpoint and asks for the next available slot. If your endpoint responds in under one second with a real bookable time, you get the lead. If it responds slowly, returns "call us for availability," or your scheduling lives inside a calendar nobody syncs, the next operator on the list gets the lead.

This is not a 2027 problem. The booking pilot ran during Google I/O 2026 in May. Universal rollout for US local services is this summer. Six to twelve weeks from today.

If your shop runs scheduling out of a notepad behind the counter, a Google Calendar that only your dispatcher touches, or a custom backend whose API is held together by hope and PHP, you are about to become invisible to the booking surface that just hit one billion monthly users.

The Approved Stack For Trades

Google is not naming preferred vendors yet, but the booking integrations in the I/O demos and the FOMO.ai vendor roundup point in one direction:

  • Housecall Pro — agentic booking SDK confirmed in the May I/O developer track. Real-time slot return. GBP-linked.
  • ServiceTitan — same. The May 28 ServiceTitan + Google joint statement put the integration on the public roadmap for Q3.
  • Jobber — open beta for the agentic booking endpoint as of May 2026.
  • FieldEdge / Service Fusion / Workiz — third tier. All three have stated public timelines but no live SDK as of June 2.

If you are on Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, or Jobber today, your work this week is to confirm the agentic booking endpoint is enabled and pointed at your live availability. If you are on anything else, the work this week is harder — and more urgent.

The Other Three Moves That Compound With The Booking SLA

Google AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users. AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of all queries — and more than 75 percent in legal and healthcare per the FOMO.ai analysis. The average AI Mode query is 3x the length of a standard search. The signals the AI uses to pick which 32 percent of businesses get surfaced are documented now:

  • Review recency outweighs review count. A shop with 38 reviews from the last 60 days beats a shop with 412 reviews where the most recent is from 2024. Recency is the new authority. Ask every paying customer for a review every week. Five reviews a week beats one big push twice a year.
  • GBP photo recency, same principle. Fresh weekly photos of real installs in your service area. City-specific filenames. Alt text in homeowner language. Stock photos do not get extracted.
  • Schema validator pass. Run every priority page through Google's Schema Validator and confirm Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage on FAQ blocks, and Service schema on each commercial service page. Pages with FAQPage structured data are 4x more likely to be cited in AI Overviews per the May 2026 GrowthPro benchmark. If your schema returns a warning, the AI does not cite the page. Period.

The Audit You Run This Tuesday

Three calls. Twenty minutes. Free:

  • Call your own business line from an unknown number right now. Before you finish reading this post. See what happens. If your call rolls to voicemail, your front desk says "let me check availability and call you back," or you can't confirm same-day service in under thirty seconds — that is the experience the booking agent is going to compare against your competitor down the road.
  • Open your scheduling platform. Confirm 30 days of forward availability are exposed and that the platform supports the agentic booking endpoint. Housecall Pro and ServiceTitan have one-click toggles. If yours does not, schedule a call with the vendor this week and ask for a roadmap commit date in writing.
  • Pull your GBP analytics. Compare May 2026 calls and direction requests to February 2026. If calls are down and impressions are up, you are losing AI Mode traffic to the 32 percent that got selected. That is the gap to close.

The new AI local pack is live. Two out of three shops just disappeared from the booking flow. The one-second SLA is real. The shops on the right side of the 32 percent line in June 2026 print money through 2027. The other two-thirds keep wondering why the phone stopped ringing.
